I know what it’s like to feel trapped in your own body and mind.

I’ve survived paralysis—twice. I’ve battled addiction, PTSD, depression, and cancer. I’ve lost loved ones to suicide and been told by doctors that I’d never walk again. But through breathwork, I proved them wrong—not once, but twice.

For years, I believed healing was out of my control. But I discovered that while we can’t change what happens to us, we can change how we respond. Using breathwork, I learned to regulate my nervous system, rewire my brain, and take back my life.

Now, I’m here to help you do the same.

A Life Rewritten—One Breath at a Time

Growing up as the son of a Special Forces officer, I saw firsthand the effects of stress and trauma. At 17, I joined the Air Force, trained in SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape), and aimed for Special Forces. But at 19, a boating accident left me paralyzed from the neck down.

Doctors said I’d never walk again. I almost believed them—until a yoga instructor and breathwork expert changed my life. Within two years, I was walking with a cane. But my challenges didn’t end there. I battled addiction, homelessness, and depression before recommitting to breathwork and reclaiming my mental health. Then came more tests—my father’s suicide, a cancer diagnosis, and a head-on car collision that left me unable to walk again. But with everything I had learned, I healed—again.

I’ve come to believe people are the universe in individual expressions. If we choose this life and the body we’re in, I think we are also able to transmute and catalyze our life’s events into experience and wisdom.

When you’re in the “messy middle,” life can seem impossible. I want to help people not fall into the darkness that I lived in for so long.

That’s the driving part of my mission: to help you navigate life without being a drug addict, an alcoholic, or a mental health or chronically ill patient.

The Willful Warrior is led by me (Leland Holgate Sr., a combat veteran, former paraplegic, and now a studying Neuropsychologist with a forthcoming double Doctorate.)

The Willful Warrior Welcome Home method is the culmination of nearly 10 years worth of research and study, and it is based in Neuroscience, Psychology, Epigenetics, and ancient breath techniques. The practice activates gene expression that upregulates health in every aspect of the body and brain, and has a very positive effect on the mind.

Everything in our breathwork and meditation sessions, including the specially selected music, creates order, coherence and stability in the body and brain.

We also use this method with our Warriors post-military service to overcome PTSD and depression. Done properly, there is a biochemical shift away from the hormones of stress – cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine, and an increase in your “happy” hormones like oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins.

It also turns on the production of metabolites, activates neuropeptides, and many healing biochemical compounds such as Dimethyltryptamine DMT (The Spirit Molecule), & Anandamide (The Bliss Molecule).
